Glass slide

Posted by websitesarelovely on Sunday, 12 May 2013

This is one of my favourite things that I have purchased at my regular car boot sale, it's an image that I would love to know more about. It took me a while to figure out what the workmen were doing in the photo, but they are laying out the bricks on to wooden letter templates, so that when they build the wall up, they will have signage bricked into the facade of the building.

The example above is a much smaller scale, but I am struggling to find any images similar - most of the photographs I can find have the lettering painted on to the building, rather than bricked into the wall.

If anyone can help identify this building, I would be really grateful, I have been searching the internet for images to verify where this - but with no luck so far. I am guessing that the sign says 'Crown' or 'Brown' and that it is from somewhere in the Manchester area, as this is where I bought the slide, but it could be from anywhere in the North of England, or even ANYWHERE.

I have searched for "Crown signage", "Crown mill" "Crown factory" "Brick lettering", "Brick signage" and all other combinations of those terms with "Brown", "Manchester", "UK" etc... but with few positive results. One of the most promising ones was discovering that Affleck's Palace in Manchester was originally home to Affleck & Brown Ltd - Drapers and Home Furnishers, but there is no photographic evidence that this sign was there.

*UPDATED*
A friend of mine has answered the question straight away, Marisol you are amazing! It's the Rowntree's Cocoa Factory in York - the image I have is identical to the one shown on the Hello Yorkshire site. I am going to have to pay it a visit and see if I can match up the photograph somehow!

Puppy in a box of Corn Flakes

I have been working on a way to capture slides (that I buy at car boot sales), using a cardboard mount, a sheet of white laser paper, a windowsill, a tripod mounted DSLR with close-up lens and remote. I will be publishing a full blog post later - I just had to share this image first.

Minolta 7s

Posted by websitesarelovely on Friday, 21 September 2012

I bought this Minolta 7s camera at the car boot sale at the weekend, and it had a film left in it. I got it developed this week - and I think the lady in the photographs are the previous owner. If I bought this camera from you, and you would like the photographs, then please get in contact with me via my website

M42 convertor and Helios 44mm lens

Posted by websitesarelovely on Friday, 27 July 2012

I bought the M42 convertor a while ago, to be able to use old camera lenses on my Canon 550D DSLR - I was always too nervous to use it, for fear of damaging my primary camera.

A few weeks ago I tried it with a 50mm fixed lens, and it worked brilliantly, so I have been experimenting (very briefly) with other lenses. This one is a Helios 44mm fixed lens, that I bought at a car boot sale, attached to a Praktica B200 electronic SLR camera. This camera also had an older convertor fitted, to convert the screw fit lens to a Praktica bayonet fitting.

I haven't had much time to experiment, but I plan to use analogue lenses more often, it's a cheap way to get a new look to my photographs - the convertor and lens together with the Praktica camera cost me around £8!

Mystery film number 4

Posted by websitesarelovely on Wednesday, 25 July 2012

I processed another mystery film found in one of my car boot sale camera purchases. I converted the photographs to black and white, as the colours had gone a bit psychedelic. If anyone recognises the rock formation, please leave me a comment - I would be great to find out where these were taken. My guess is somewhere in North Wales (as the camera was purchased in Cheshire).

*UPDATE* I have just done a search online, and I think the stone circle might be Callanish Circle, in the Outer Hebrides, (the Western Isles of Scotland).

These are some of my favourite photographs from car boot sales and flea markets. I love seeing other people's lives through photography.

Buy old junk, make new awesome

Step 1: Got to a car boot sale, buy a terrible clock for £2 and a cool ornament for 50p.
Step 2: Remove the clock and cut a felt circle to line the bottom with.
Step 3: Put felt lining in, and add the cool ornament.
Step 4: Feel smug and awesome.
